The 2 Steves spent Australia Day promoting the King Parrot Creek Environment Group at the Flowerdale Recreation Reserve in Spring Valley Road. A constant stream of children were kept intrigued by the 3 Eastern Long Neck turtles and the 2 snapping turtles on display in a fish tank. What is it with boys that when you say ‘don’t do it’ they always do it anyway? The Steves were kept on their toes keeping them from losing fingers to the snappers.
Later in the day, some of the children had the experience of handling a snake that was part way through shedding its skin. Our local snakes; the brown, tiger and red bellied black are not recommended for handling by children or adults for that matter, being highly venomous. This little Darwin Carpet Python however was a gentle creature with beautiful markings that gave a nice squeeze as he wrapped himself around the children’s arms.
Apart from people applying for membership, Australia Day was also a success with one of our committee members; Trent Patten, being awarded a medal for the Flowerdale citizen of the year from the Flowerdale Australia Day Committee. Trent convened the Flowerdale Environment Work Engine executive committee that put in a lot of hard work between 2010 and 2012 , to acquire weed control equipment, chemical user education, nest box installation and walking path maintenance for the community. Trent has also been a co-ordinator of the ‘Blackberry Bash’ and is a member of the current Blackberry Taskforce. Congratulations Trent!
